From Complex Oracle Schemas to Usable System Insight
How the Oracle ERD Builder helps utility technology teams explore Oracle Utilities data with confidence.
A client team building data extracts and reports asked for a visual of the database behind its application. A printed schema was too large to be useful. They needed a focused way to explore relevant tables and relationships, then retain what they learned for future work.

01 / The problem
Knowing a schema is not the same as understanding it.
Oracle Energy and Water Customer Care and Billing (CC&B) and Customer to Meter (C2M) environments can contain hundreds or thousands of database objects. A technical question may cross standard Oracle objects, C2M metadata, customer extensions, and relationships known mainly to long-serving team members.
Database tools expose tables and constraints, but a full-schema diagram can overwhelm the specific question at hand. Not every meaningful relationship is a simple foreign key, and the results of a good investigation can be difficult to save, explain, or resume. The client's request for a database visual called for a working map of the relevant domain, rather than a printout of everything.
02 / The workbench
Build only the view the question needs.
The Oracle ERD Builder is a browser-based workbench for building focused, navigable views of an Oracle schema. Authorized users can search and filter tables, include or exclude patterns, choose whether to include views, and assemble a selection basket as a repeatable starting point.
Control the graph
Set relationship depth, incoming links, relationship source, and node and edge limits. Search tables within the graph, use graph tabs, arrange nodes manually or automatically, and focus the view.
Review relationships
Build relationships from Oracle metadata, C2M metadata, or both. Likely connections can appear as inferred suggestions for human approval, individually or as an appropriate trusted set. The graph distinguishes established metadata from approved inference.
Retain the investigation
Save a full workspace session with filters, selections, tabs, layouts, and options, or save a snapshot of a graph. Export current views as JSON, SVG, PNG, or PDF for documentation and collaboration.
When a graph becomes complex, a user can create a separate graph from a table and examine a smaller part of the schema. The interface uses React Flow for interactive diagramming. Its connection workflow supports Oracle service-name or SID identifiers and thin or thick Oracle connection modes; in thick mode, Oracle Instant Client is managed on the application server.
03 / Privacy & control
A responsible operating model is part of the workflow.
The application presents saved connection profiles and saved sessions as encrypted on the server and scoped to the user account. Users test a connection before an investigation. Regular users manage their own application data, while administrative user-management actions are separate from normal technical work.
Client teams can align use of the application with their own security, privacy, network, and data-governance requirements. These descriptions reflect the current interface and workflow; they are not a substitute for a client-specific security review.
04 / In practice
Make technical understanding easier to build and share.
The workbench gives analysts, developers, DBAs, architects, and implementation teams a shared starting point. It supports expert judgment by making the relevant objects and relationship paths easier to inspect and discuss.
Data extracts & reporting
Trace the objects and dependencies behind a report or extract before defining or changing it.
Impact analysis
Begin from affected tables or C2M objects and trace related objects at a controlled depth.
Troubleshooting
Create a focused view of the objects surrounding a business process or data issue.
Onboarding
Give new team members a visual, navigable explanation of a domain instead of a raw table list.
Documentation
Export a curated graph for technical designs, runbooks, and project artifacts.
Knowledge continuity
Save the filters, selection basket, layout, and options behind a useful investigation.
05 / Account domain example
Start with CI_ACCT. Explore outward deliberately.
The sample Account workspace brings together 17 related C2M objects around CI_ACCT, including account alerts, automatic payment, account characteristics, account-person relationships, person information, contact details, and supporting reference tables. A technical team can inspect table fields and relationship paths in one focused workspace.
That is the practical value: start from a recognizable domain object, examine the nearby model, and retain a visual record of what the team learned.
06 / Potential next steps
What could be next
The ERD Builder provides a foundation for technical discovery. The following are potential future capabilities, not features of the current workbench:
- Natural-language guidance for framing a schema question and explaining a selected graph.
- Change-impact views across a selected domain, interface, or configuration area.
- Collaborative annotations, comments, review workflows, and controlled sharing or versioning.
- Richer relationship scoring and explanations, retaining human approval for non-metadata relationships.
- Integration with delivery documentation, backlog items, and technical design artifacts.
Each capability would need governance appropriate to the client environment. The aim is to make expert work faster, clearer, and more repeatable while retaining expert accountability.
07 / Access & pilot
Begin with a bounded question.
The Oracle ERD Builder is currently best introduced through a guided conversation or pilot. A pilot can begin with a bounded technical question, an authorized non-production or representative Oracle environment, and a small group of technical users.
An initial discussion can establish the domain to explore, connection and access requirements, expected outputs, and the client's security and governance expectations.
